Unique & Surprising
About this coffee
This coffee is sourced through our import partners at Falcon Coffee. Saul Menor Taica owns 4 hectares of land in the San Francisco area of the Huabal district. The altitude at the farm ranges from 1900 to 2000 masl and Saul grows both caturra and catimor/castillo. In the past Saul had even more land and it was all planted with caturra, but since he didn’t use any form of fertiliser or compost, the yields gradually declined and plant health decreased. In response to the falling production, Saul decided to sell some of his land and with the money, renovate the land with catimor, which he thought would be more productive and a better option for him since he wasn’t selling his coffee based on its quality. Saul had even converted two hectares to pasture land and started raising cattle and planted a number of different cash crops.
Saul has been working with Falcon for two years now and was one of the first producer members to deliver coffee and from the start was very open to change and keen to improve. Over the two years, Saul has greatly improved the cherry selection, which has seen his coffee improve by as much as 4 points and the greatest improvement was seen on his caturra variety. This quality increase has translated into a threefold increase in household income and Saul is already renovating his catimor and planting caturra again.
